The Changing Nature of the American Way of War

As American advisors go back to Iraq, I am reminded that President Truman sent the first American advisors to Vietnam in May 1950 and established the military assistance and advisory group (MAAG) in Saigon in September that year. We all know how that war turned out 25 years later.

Why Should You Hire a Veteran?

The federal government, universities, banks, companies that have government contracts and others who do business with the federal government are required to included veterans as a “protected class” under the law that includes a hiring preference for veterans. This so-called protected class is because of their selfless service to the nation in often difficult and dangerous circumstances.

Socrates and the Barbarians

Scott Samuelson wrote an opinion piece in the March 28, 2014 issue of the Wall Street Journal.[i] The title of his article was, “Would you hire Socrates?” He said the myth that studying humanities doesn’t pay was debunked by a study co-authored by the Association of American College and Universities and the National Center for Higher Education Management System.

On Tribes

Samuel P. Huntington, in his 1996 ground breaking book Clash of Civilizations, noted that “people define themselves in terms of ancestry, religion, language, history, values, customs and institutions. They identify with cultural groups: tribes, ethnic groups, religious communities, nations and, at the broadest level, civilizations.”
